Questionnaires on research finding and discussion in ESL or EFL Classroom

It have been stated in previous post that few weeks ago there is a research that have been done. The research is about the use of LI in English class. The data was collected from various schools by researching how the teacher taught the student, and by interviewing them. Another data was collected using Questionnaire to obtain the highest reliabilities of this research. The questionnaires were given to the teacher and students. The questionnaire items focused on the subjects’ opinions toward the use of Bahasa Indonesia, the various occasions when they think Bahasa Indonesia can be used, and the perceived effectiveness of Bahasa Indonesia in the English classroom. There will be two types of Questionnaires.

This is A questionnaire given to the teachers (Teacher questionnaire).

a) Should Bahasa Indonesia be used in the classroom?

In response to the question of should Bahasa Indonesia be used in English class, the teacher answer ‘Yes’. It means that during teaching learning process, the teacher not only used English but also LI.

b) In your opinion, in which the following situations should Bahasa Indonesia be used?

In response to the question above, the teacher claimed that in was useful for explaining difficult concepts and explaining complex grammar points. The teacher also felt that the use of Bahasa Indonesia was important for giving instructions and orders. It means that the teacher used Bahasa Indonesia based on the situations. It was clear that the teacher used Bahasa Indonesia in the certain occasions.

c) If you think the use of Bahasa Indonesia is necessary in the classroom why?

Concerning why the use of Bahasa Indonesia is necessary in English classroom, the teacher answered because “it facilities students’ understanding much”. So, there was clear indications that the use of Bahasa Indonesia helps the students to understand English.

d) Do you believe using Bahasa Indonesia in English class helps you teach this language?

In teacher opinion, the use of Bahasa Indonesia in English class “fairly much” helps her to teach English. The use of Bahasa Indonesia makes the teacher more easier to communicate with the students.

e) How often do you think Bahasa Indonesia should be used in English class?

The teacher suggested that Bahasa Indonesia should be used “sometimes”. It can be seen that using bahasa Indonesia was not too frequently and not too rarely. It also indicates that using Bahasa Indonesia too much or even never will not improve students’ comprehension in English.

After the questionnaire was collected from the teachers, the student also given questionnaire with almost identical questions.

To get data from the students, I gave the questionnaire to them that related to the observe topic. When the researcher gave the questionnaire, the samples only 17 students, four students were absent at that time.

The table above shows that the students responded positively toward the use of Bahasa Indonesia. A high percentage of the students (92,31%) who participated in this study think that Bahasa Indonesia should be used in the classroom. Only a student who disagree if the mother tongue be used. It means that the majority of the students need the use of LI in their classroom to mastery English.

When the students were asked this question, the majority of them (61,54%) came up with “Very much”, (23,08%) liked it “sometimes”, (7,69%) of them answer “ a little” and only also (7,69%) does not like it use. It can be included that the students need the use of Bahasa Indonesia. When the students are no longer to understand the English, some Indonesia will make the students feel easier to understand it.

The table of analyzed above shows that the highest percentage (30,77%) of the student argued that using Bahasa Indonesia was useful to give instructions and orders. (23, 08%) to explain difficult concepts. Similar (13,08%) a greed that it should be used to explain complex grammar point. While (15,38%) of the respondents claimed it was important to translate difficult words. It, of course, similar with the data obtained from observations. Even (7,60%) thought that it can make the students feel comfortable and confident. it was clear that the students were generally positive toward it use in certain occasion. It indicates that the use of Bahasa Indonesia would facilitate the learning of English.

In explaining why they think the use of Bahasa Indonesia is necessary in EFL classroom, the majority of the student participants (46,15%) indicated that it helps them to understand difficult concepts better. (30,77%) answered that it makes them feel at ease, comfortable and less stressed in studying English. And, (23,08%) suggested that Bahasa Indonesia was necessary to understand new vocabulary items. It can be concluded that using Bahasa Indonesia has an important roles in learning foreign language.

The data shows that almost half of the student respondents (46,15%) felt that using Bahasa Indonesia help them “a lot”. (38%) suggested that it helps them “fairly much” and only (15,38%) said that they were helped “a little”. The finding indicate that the use of LI will not reduce students’ exposure in English. On the other hand, it supports them to learn this language.

Considering to the table of analyzed above, more than half of the student respondents (61,54%) thought that bahasa Indonesia should be used in the classroom “fairly frequently”. This finding was dissimilar with the teacher investigated who answered that it should be used only “sometimes”, while, only some of the students (30,77%) answered “sometimes”. And a very small of them (7,69%) felt that bahasa Indonesia should never be used in English class. This result also dissimilar with the study that was conducted by Irna Diana (2012). In her study, most of the student respondents suggested that bahasa Indonesia should be used only “sometimes”. A possible explanation for this differences is that the students’ English proficiency level in this study was lower than their study.

  1. What type of identical questions you used in questionnaire for students… And what opinions you got to use Bahasa Indonesia in Classroom.

    • I used direct approach in the questionnaire along with special conversation (couldn’t write it in the article as it has privacy concern). My opinion about using Bahasa Indonesia in class is it can be useful for students and teachers but it depend on the skills and several aspects.
